Maine Literary Awards announced in 17 categories

Portland Press Herald reporter Bob Keyes was acknowledgedfor his commitment to covering the state’s literary arts with a distinguished achievement award from the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. Maine Literary Awards were presented in 17 categories, including fiction, crime fiction, nonfiction, memoir and children’s books. The alliance will announce the winners in a mailing to independent bookstores across Maine that also will include stickers that booksellers can affix to winning books. Gallery opens in Mount Vernon

From an article in the Morning Sentinel By Paul Koenig pkoenig@centralmaine.com MOUNT VERNON — After working full time for more than two years to restore a former Odd Fellows Hall, a Dutch woodworker opened his gallery to the public for the first time Saturday in the century-old building at the edge of Minnehonk Lake. The small gallery space has several shelfs and tables, some with pictures of creatures carved into the wood, that Erik Groenhout built after completing his workshop in the theater of the Odd Fellows building on Pond Road.

Book by Charles Norman Shay In 2007 Charles Norman Shay went to Washington, DC, to receive the Legion of Honor medal from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The medal has joined the others bestowed on him, including a Silver Star and four bronze battle stars from World War II and the Korean War, in his home on the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation in Old Town, Maine. As a young Army medic he had been in the famed 1st Infantry Division that landed in the first wave on Omaha Beach, Normandy. Call to artists Down on the Farm River Arts exhibition

Entry Form Artists are invited to submit work for jurying into the River Arts “Down on the Farm” Exhibition.   Artists are encouraged to submit up to 3 works in any medium and that deals with farm life:  inhabitants, equipment, landscape, architecture, etc.   The work can be delivered anytime the gallery is open, but no later than May 24th  at 4:00 pm.   The exhibition will run May 30 – June 19 with an opening reception May 30th 5-7pm. The juror for the exhibition is  Kerstin Engman who exhibits at the Arden Gallery, Boston, and the Courthouse Gallery, Ellsworth, among other venues.

The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance announce finalists for the 2014 Maine Literary Awards

The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance announced their finalists for the 2014 Maine Literary Awards. This year’s awards brought in a record-breaking number of submissions: Nearly one hundred and twenty-five books were entered across the genres. More than seventy manuscripts were submitted into the award’s Short Works Competition in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Nearly seventy Maine students submitted work in the same categories in the award’s Youth Competition. The MWPA is honored to have three independent bookstores sponsoring this year’s literary awards. Human Trafficking highlighted in Maine arts

Out of the Shadows:  Bringing Human Trafficking Issues to the Forefront in Maine Human Trafficking is one of the most serious social issues of our time. It is estimated that globally 21 million people live as slaves today. These numbers far exceed any period of time in history, including that of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Conferences and speaking engagements have become important venues in bringing awareness to this 32 billion dollar industry however, as the industry grows, our need for awareness needs to increase as well. Out of the Shadows: bringing human trafficking issues to the forefront in Maine hopes to do just that on May 13th at 6pm at The Hive, 84 main Street, in Kennebunk.

Maine potters throw open studio doors to offer sampling of their wares

This article appeared in the Kennebec JournalBy Betty Adams Here is an excerpt: Would local foods taste and look better if they were served on plates and bowls crafted of local clay? Find out by sampling some of Malley Weber’s earthenware and ceramics created from clay she digs from the alluvial plain of the Androscoggin River and brings to her Hallowell studio. In Farmingdale, Neal Loken decorates each of his ceramic bowls and vases and lamp bases and mugs with a silver maple leaf taken from a tall tree in his backyard. Wife Barb Loken creates whimsical pieces of art and pottery, including the “Drink Smart,” pig-handled Albert Swine Stein.
