River Arts Call to Artists: “Artists’ Choice”

River Arts in Damariscotta, is inviting artists to submit work for its upcoming “Artists’ Choice” Exhibition. We are seeking submissions of in any media, sculpture and fine crafts welcome. Work can be submitted during gallery hours anytime up to 4pm on Saturday, February 21st at 4 pm. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, February 27, from 5-7. The exhibition will hang until March 26.

Hewnoaks Artist Colony opens residency applications

Applications for residency at the Hewnoaks Artist Colony on Lake Kezar at Center Lovell are open and will be accepted through March 8, 2015. This will be the third year of the residency, which gives artists a chance to spend one to three weeks concentrating on their work. The residencies are available for artists in many disciplines, including visual, literary and performing arts. They run June 27 through Sept. 19.

Autus – A New Arts Collective in Bidderford, Maine

Maine Arts Commission to make more changes to help artists and art organizations

From the Portland Press Herald: Maine Arts Commission to be more responsive The group will hold a workshop in Portland on Wednesday to discuss changes to its grants programs. BY BOB KEYES Excerpt from the story: The Maine Arts Commission, which distributes about $500,000 annually, is working to become more responsive to the arts community with a retooled grants program and the hiring of a new assistant director whose expertise involves running a small arts organization… The Maine Arts Commission will hold a workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Osher Hall, Maine College of Art, 522 Congress St., Portland. The workshop will explain changes to the commission’s grant program.

Sculptor Transforms Maine Fishermen’s Trash

MPBN’s Tom Porter reports on New York artist Orly Genger’s sculptures made out of discarded rope purchased from Maine fishermen. An excerpt from his report: PORTLAND, Maine – A New York-based artist has become an unlikely source of revenue for a lot of Maine lobstermen. Internationally-renowned sculptor Orly Genger makes massive works of art using rope – particularly discarded lobster line. Genger’s latest project is a monumental sculpture to be installed in South Korea next year, utilizing more than 3 million feet of rope. And to craft the piece, she’s prepared to pay fishermen good money for outdated trap lines they don’t have much use for.
