New International Art Gallery opening in Portland, Maine

Portland Mayor Michael Brennan will cut the ribbon on Friday, May 2 at 5:00 PM at the new Roux & Cyr International Fine Art Gallery, located at 48 Free Street. This will commemorate the gallery’s soft opening and the start of the First Friday May Art Walk. The public is welcome to attend. MECA art student makes green crab invasion of Maine real

A Maine College of Art student, Hanji O’Chang of O’Chang Comics, animated a video that is raising awareness about the devastating impact of green crabs on the soft-shell clam industry. O’Chang worked with University of Maine at Machias professor Brian Beal, scientist Darcie Couture of Resource Access International LLC, the Maine Clammers Association and others to learn about the army of green crabs that are devastating soft-shell clams up and down the Maine coast. “Attack of the Green Crabs,” is a 4½-minute news type video narrated by Adam O’Chang and posted on YouTube

Call for Artists – Inspired by Katahdin at Maine’s Harlow Gallery in November

The Harlow Gallery invites Maine artists to submit work to the upcoming exhibition Inspired by Katahdin to be presented in partnership with brothers David & Carl Little in November 2014. Artist and author David Little has long been inspired by Maine’s tallest mountain, so much so that he wrote a book,  Art of Katahdin: The Mountain, the Range, the Region published by Down East Books in 2013. The book follows a historic timeline using art inspired by the majestic mountain, as well as a collection of Katahdin literature, photography, graphics, maps and more, and was edited by Carl Little.

Twelfth annual POETS/SPEAK! at Bangor Public Library

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Bangor Public Library is hosting the twelfth annual POETS/SPEAK!, Wednesday, April 23 from 4:15-8 p.m. POETS/SPEAK! is one of the largest free poetry events in Maine. This year will feature more than 25 well-known and emerging poets, University of Maine student poets, local Poetry Outloud winners, and book sales and signings. Live jazz will be provided by saxophonist Jay Bregman and the Swingmatism Quintet from 4:15-4:50 p.m., and this year also features an homage to the late social, political, and environmental activist poets Amiri Baraka, Maxine Kumin, and José Emilio Pacheco.

New gallery to lease in Brunswick, Maine, issues call to Artists

The Gallery at 11 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, Maine, will open on May 9, 2014. The Gallery will offer 1410 square feet of space with track lighting, as well as mezzanine space for rent. 11 Pleasant seeks a combination of fine 2D art, sculpture, carving, and hand-made jewelry. Space is leased to juried artists/artisans in three-week time periods. For jewelry and 3D objects the leases would be on a monthly basis. No membership fees are collected. Each three week period is structured to contain a 2nd Friday Artwalk night, with live music and refreshments at 11 Pleasant. Promotion and assistance with display design are a part of the rental fee.
